Dozer & Smigg | WIP | Step by Step

For my birthday I got the super awesome Model "Dozer & Smigg" (Privateer Pres | Hordes | Trollbloods), because what else as a nice toy can you make for someone who turned 29?
It's a Character Heavy Diretroll that got nice rules for Gunnbjorn and Diretroll Blitzers - which both I do not like to play. But Dozer & Smigg also bring the fun for Diretroll Bombers and the Trollkin War Wagon - both which I love to play! This Model will fit nicely into my Attrition Alpha Strike Ambush list for Jarl, and also I r*e*a*l*l*y want to paint it.

So here we go, primed and ready.

When painting I do it by a 3-step principle:
1 - Base before everything else;
2 - Imprecise before precise techniques (like drybrushing/stippling before blending);
3 - Inner before outer areas.

For the base I mix a BASEcoat (you can laugh if you like to) consisting of Dryard Bark (Citadel) and a tiny bit of Cold Grey (Vallejo | Game Color).

For first drybrush step I heavilly add Skrag Brown (Citadel).

For the second step drybrushing it's rather pure Skrag Brown.

Followd by lighty drybrushed 'Jack Bone (P3).

Now it's time to wash the entire Base. A mix of Agrax Earthshade (Citadel), Reikland Fleshshade (Citadel), Glaze Medium (Vallejo) and Water (about 1:1:2:2).

When the base is finished I start with almost everything that is made of iron and metal: armour, bombard, and the likes of it. I take from every step a picture form the front, from top of the gun and the left hand armour.

The basecoat for all metal parts ist Cold Iron (P3) and Coal Black (P3) in a ratio of about 7:1.

Next I need to paint the fixtures, made of gold with a mix of Glorious Gold (Vallejo) and Coal Black, in a ratio of about 5:1.

The first wash needs to be rather dark; therefore I use Coal Black, Agrax Earthshade, Glaze Medium, and water in a ratio of 2:1:2:5.

To the second wash I add much more Agrax Earthshade.

Now comes the fun part. I ripped off a small part of the blister foam and dipped an edge into pure Cold Iron. Just like with drybrushing I put off a lot of the color on a paper towel and stared to dab random areas. Important at this step is to dab in a up-and-down-move and not to pull the foam over the surface, because this would cause undesirable effects.
Since I am very unprecise with this technique a huge part of the gold parts was dabed with metal, but I take care of that later.

After the dabed areas have dried, I apply a wash of Reikland Flesshade, Glaze Medium and Water, in a ratio of 1:2:2.

One more time I dabed all areas, this time with Cold Iron mixed with Silver (Vallejo Air).

Now I need to reconstruct the gold. I paint lightly again all areas that were painted gold before, but I leave some areas still silver.

After this I prepare a wash of Glaze Medium, Reikland Fleshshade, Atonia Camoshade (Citadel), and water, in a ratio of 1:2:1:2 and apply this wash only to the golden areas.

Now for the final weathing effect. I mix black and orange pigments (both Vallejo) with Water and Glaze Medium, in a ratio of 1:1:3:5 and apply it in a very thin coat on all silver areas with special attention to all rivets.

For the gold parts, there is no rust but verdigris. I mixed Nihilac Oxide (Citadel) with Glaze Medium and water, in a ratio of 1:1:2 and put it on all golden rivets.

Dozer's armour now is having an appearance of being worn in battle for a long time... just exactly what he does. Smigg's helmet got the same treatment, by the way.

The next step is to paint the bombard partly red, to make it easy to intenfiy as looted Khadoran wargear.

Ossyan's Retribution - Part 2

Last week I closed Ossyan's list for at least a month and will not alternate that list. I've played six games with this list (win 2:4 loses) and still have problems in thread assessment. I regularly lose either both jacks on round 2 or 2/3 of all my infantry. That's not what I like. One loss was due to Butcher3 right in my face, but that's another story.

Here I've finished my favourite models of the list: Hypnos and the Artificer.
Void Lock says: no channeling and no forcing for you, sir!

Oh yes, Force Barrier all over my body!

And I added a full unit of Mage Hunter Infiltrators & Eiryss3. They serve lightning fast (pillow-fisted) punches quite early in the came and just killed with remaining two models Stryker2 (who was put under Ossyan's Temporal Disorder AOE).

Ninja Razor Blade Elves with + SPD9 and + Advanced Deployment: 1st round headache.

With this list I plan to win a tournament on July 26th. Not many people participating yet, but hey! 4 is a party, right?

Ossyan +6
- Hypnos 9
- Discordia 10
- Sylys 2

Mage Hunter Strike Force 8
- Commander 2
Mage Hunter Infiltrators 8
- Eiryss3  3
Stormfall Archer 5

Battle Mage Magister 2
Battle Mage Artificer 3
Mage Hunter Assassin 2
Mage Hunter Assassin 2

It's all about attrition, clearly. Ossyan and Hypnos are serving movement hindrances while the Mage Hunter go kill obnoxious models as long caster kill is not possible. On turn 2 there'll be Gravity Well and I hope to shoot every enemy model into the ground. That's my plan. Not very cunning but effective enough. If just Butcher3 doesn't run so fast...

Ossyan's Retribution

In 2013 from February till August I was writing my master’s thesis. I was chained either to the computer or an uber-big desk at the library, either reading or writing on a very dry but interesting subject. As an adequate time-out I was interested in painting models so much more and from zero to a thousand I took my interest in the Angry Elves. I got me a Forces Of Retribution book and was hooked on the very first pages.
So I had my project for the spare freetime.

I started with Ravyn, Eternal Light, but as I had my first games on 35 points, I couldn’t handle her well. When I compared my Ravyn-experiences with other warcasters, my eyes always came back to Ossyan, who brings everything I need: Quicken (buff for SPD and DEF), Shatter Storm (3” AOE with POW 8 on Mage Hunter Strike Force is sooo broken!), Admonition (for canceling melee assassinations), Arcantrik Bolt (for making ‘jacks stationary) and his gun with a supersweet control ability. Ossyan’s feat as well is deadly when combined with Mage Hunter Strike Force (f*ck you, enemy ‘jacks!) or Stormfall Archers (POW12+4d6 damage roll is denting everything, and a POW6 blast + 3d6 still hurts most of all infantery) or Discordia’s Psycho Cannon (SP10, POW14, magical attack!). A lot of fun stuff.

Eiryss2 is assisting in harassing enemy solos, getting risk of pesky upkeeps and damage enemy warcasters on Ossyan’s feat turn.

Discordia, Daemon and Phoenix: verrrrrry powerful myrmidons with a very good combination of damage output both on ranged and melee attacks.

Magisters for movement shenanigans (Smite Attack, Whip Snap, Force Bolt) and contesting control zones. Dahlia Wyshnalyr for free upkeeps and a semi-boost on Ossyan’s Arcantrik Bolt.

Stormfall Archers and Mage Hunter Strike Force are the Bringers of Destruction. It is situational what the Strike Force gets: Shatter Storm or Quicken (depends on what my opponent is putting on the table) but I found Shatter Storm somewhat more useful (must be based on local meta of tightly packed infantry hordes).

My 50 points Ossyan list right now is:
Ossyan              +6
- Discordia         10
- Hypnos            9
- Sylys’ Sister     2
 Mage Hunter Strike Force   8
Commander                         2
2x Stormfall Archers            10
 2x Magister      4
2x Assassin       4
Eiryss 2             3
Artificer            3
Arcanist             1

I am still testing that list and I find it very often missing some melee action. Therefore right now I am considering swapping both Magisters and both Assassins (making 8 points) for a full unit of Mage Hunter Infiltrators and giving Eiryss and upgrade to level 3. But before that more playing!
